As I visit properties and walk lawns I am noticing red thread in most lawns the last few days.  It is easily identified by the pink fungus that has grown on the leaf blades.  Noticeable without magnification these areas are typically in 4-8” rings.  The lawn can have an appearance of dry conditions or drying out, but this is not the case.

What you need to know:

  1. In most cases with residential lawns you do not need to apply a fungicide.
  2. Fertility is the key.  A good fertilizing with nitrogen will push the diseases out.
  3. This is caused by low fertility, and weather conditions.
  4. Do not water at night.  In fact, give the lawn a chance to dry out.

I have included this link that has some great information about this fungal foliar disease.
